7/7/ was Michelle Kwan’s thirty-first birthday, and I meant to post something on it, but I forgot. Anyway, I’m doing so now. This is her performance of Tosca from the 2004 US nationals. She won her eighth national title with this performance, and she completely blew the roof off. It’s perfection, from the program itself, to her skating, to that gorgeous dress.
This is one of my favorite performances of all time. This skate was spectacular.

I haven’t really been to any skating shows or competitions (save for SOI 2010) so I’m gonna cheat a bit. I wasn’t there, but this was the first time I ever really cried while watching someone skate. It’s heartbreaking but also such a beautiful moment. If I go on, I’ll tear up just thinking about it. Sorry about your emotions.

This exact moment is one of my favorite pieces of choreography ever, if not my favorite. It just fits so perfectly, with purpose and sense of the music. It’s special. It’s inspired. In my best Queen Sandra Bezic voice, “TO SKATE LIKE THAT IN A MOMENT LIKE THIS.”
There are…no words. To describe. I mean, I was seriously about to make another post about Charlie’s history of standing in the way of greatness until this dropped into my lap, so to speak. This is/was a wonderful day for everybody involved.
I think the existence of this picture means that I’m mentally allowing myself to post Maozuka here now.
